How to Pack Tall Table Lamps

Your major problem in packing a tall lamp may be acquiring a carton large enough to accommodate the lamp. If you can’t find such a carton you can purchase dish pack cartons from your mover in which to pack tall lamps. Dish pack cartons are tall, extra sturdy cartons originally intended for packing fragile articles, such as dishes.

Remove lamp shade and bulb, Wrap cord around base of lamp.

Line the bottom of your carton with a considerable amount of wadded-up packing paper. This will insure extra cushioning and protection for the lamp.

Spread out several sheets of packing paper so that your packing paper is extended longer and wider than the lamp. Place lamp in the center of your packing paper.

Roll packing paper around your lamp. Tuck in the end of the paper at base of lamp. Use sealing tape, it necessary, to prevent end from coming apart.

Seal the seams where packing paper overlaps around your bundle with your tape.

Fold up other end (at the top of lamp) of packing paper and seal with tape, Place bundle in previously lined carton.

If you have several tall table lamps, place them each in the carton so that the base of one lamp is next to the top of the next lamp. Alternate them. This will make them fit better in the carton.

When all lamps are packed in the carton, fill out the carton with plenty of wadded-up packing paper. Be generous. Mark “FRAGILE” and “LAMPS” in large, clear letters on all sides of the carton.

Always plan ahead

Start purchasing boxes early. An easy way to store cartons so that they won’t require a great deal of storage is flatten them out. You can open them up again and re-seal the bottoms with your plastic tape as you are ready to use them.

Pack on a room-by-room basis. That is, don’t pack articles from the living room in boxes with articles from the kitchen. This will save much confusion later when it’s time to unpack.

If possible, start packing early. Remember, if you were to pack only a couple of boxes a day, in thirty days you would have sixty boxes packed. You could start in areas where the goods are not in frequent use – such as the cellar, attic, garage, closet shelves, etc.

Hanging clothing, such as suits, dresses and coats, should be hung in wardrobe cartons. This will save you the trouble and expense of having your garments cleaned and pressed later. Hanging clothing cannot be left in garment bags. Garment bags were not designed to be used as movers wardrobes, and they will not withstand the stress. Clothing to be hung is usually taken out of the garment bags, hung in the wardrobes, and the garment bags folded and placed in the bottom of the wardrobe.

Dresser drawers need to be empty. Movers usually do not move chests of drawers with the contents of drawers left intact. Too much weight in the drawer could cause damage to the drawer while your furniture is in transit.

What size boxes should you use? The rule-of-thumb here is the small, heavy articles, such as books, records, canned goods, etc., would go in smaller boxes. Bulkier, but not-so-heavy articles, such as pots and pans, linens, small kitchen appliances, etc., would go in somewhat larger boxes. Very bulky, lightweight articles, such as blankets, pillows, toys, large lampshades, shoes, etc., would go in the largest boxes.

Do not pack for moving on a van any flammables, combustibles, or explosives. The safety of the shipment is the primary concern. Movers are not supposed to transport aerosol spray cans, paint thinner, gasoline, or anything else of a flammable or explosive nature.

What you'll need for the first night/day

Most movers, especially the do-it-yourself kind, are so happy to finally arrive in their new home that they don't even mind that a few dinner plates are chipped, there's a scratch on their table or that their favourite ornament has been broken. • Don't apply tape directly to polished or painted wood finishes. Removing the tape could ruin the surface. 

• Be sure to have plenty of "filling" material available; when in doubt, use more.

What you'll need for the first night/day

Prepare for the first night in your new home by packing essential items in a separate box and taking it with you. You may even want to prepare a simple meal that you can heat and serve on your first night.

• For each person in the household: a change of clothes, a towel, prescription drugs, a toothbrush, and other personal items.

Mark all your boxes so you can easily find your items once you move into your new home. You also need to purchase packing tape and a tape dispenser. Assembling your Moving Boxes

    You’re now ready to learn how to assemble your boxes. Some of your boxes will come folded. You need to unfold them and tape the bottom securely. You’ll need one strip of tape to secure the top and 3 additional strips across the seam. And then you’ll use one strip of tape on each side. You’re now ready to turn over your box and start packing but before you do tape down the front two sides of the box this will allow you easy access to load your content. Many of the boxes made by Colt Paper already come with the sides on the top down for easy access all you have to do when you’re done packing is simply break the seal and your boxes are ready to go.

What is a Gaylord box

Gaylord boxes contain multiple layers of cardboard to provide sturdy support for any materials contained within. Gaylord boxes can be used to hold raw plastic resin, scrap pieces, regrind pellets, component parts, rags, and many other items. When used with a skid, these boxes can stack on top of one another for vertical storage. Often, a used gaylord box can provide just as much stability as a new gaylord box. Pay attention to the weight rating for each box to ensure that overstacking will not cause a safety hazard. Most used 3 wall and 4 wall boxes can safely hold 1000 - 1800 lbs, but it is always best to look at the weight rating for each box that you are loading.

Moving your valuables

Moving your valuables is dangerous and unfortunately accidents do happen, however you can try to avoid or at least minimize damage by following some basic guidelines.

After you collect your packing materials, select a work area that is large enough to handle various sizes of cartons.  Keep your marking pens, tape and scissors nearby. Spread a neatly stacked, generous amount of packing paper flat on your work area.

Here are some basic recommendations for packing various items.

Dishware - Use this technique on all saucers, bread and butter dishes and other dishware. When packing smaller dishes, you may choose to stack in greater quantities.

1. Select a cardboard box and line the bottom of the carton with crumpled packing paper.
2. With butchers paper stacked in place on the work table, center your plate on the paper. Grasp a corner of several sheets and wrap until the plate is completely covered.
3. Move the plate to the side and do the same with two more plates, stacking them on top of each other after wrapping.
4. Turn the wrapped stack of plates upside down onto your paper.
5. Re-wrap the entire bundle. Start with one corner of packing paper and pull two sheets over the bundle; cover the bundle with the next corner, then the third corner; and finally, the fourth
6. Seal the bundle with packing tape.
7. Place the bundle of dishware in the box so that the plates are standing on edge.
Cups - More delicate cups should be stuffed with crumpled tissue or butchers paper and wrapped one at a time as well.
1. Wrap each cup individually in butchers paper.
2. Place cups in a vertical position, lips down, near the top of the box. Do not stack heavy items on top of the cups.
Glasses and Stemware - As you pack each layer of a box, use crumpled packing paper to assure a snug fit wherever there is a gap. All boxes that contain fragile items should be marked "Fragile."
1. Before wrapping, stuff glassware and stemware with crumpled tissue or butchers paper.
2. Lay glass or stemware on the corner of the packing paper and roll it one or two full rotations (depending on size); pull the sides of the packing paper up and over the glass/stemware and continue rolling to the far corner.
3. Glasses and stemware should be placed toward the top of the box. Heavier items (dishware, pitchers, etc.) should be placed toward the bottom. Very delicate glassware and stemware should be placed in a vertical position, lips down — not on their sides.

Small Appliances and Utensils — Wrap and place small appliances and utensils in sturdy cartons with heavier items on the bottom.

Bedding — Fold and pack all pillowcases, sheets and towels in clean cartons. Pack blankets, quilts and comforters in large cartons.

Books — Pack on edge in smaller cartons. Alternate bindings, don't overload cartons. (Remember — try to limit individual carton weight to 20 kilos.)

Canned Goods and Other Non-Frozen Foods — Pack upright in smaller cartons with no more than 24 to 30 cans per carton. Wrap glass containers and boxed foods individually and pack in small cartons.
China and Glassware — Glassware and china cups should be stuffed with tissue. Do not nest unwrapped glasses. Pack plates, platters and saucers on edges and layer with padding between each layer as well as on the top and bottom of the carton. Be sure to label these boxes "Fragile."

Clothing —. Fold and pack clothing in clean cartons.

DVD Players, CD Players  — Use original packing materials when available. If original packing materials are not available, refer to the owner's manuals for further information. Wrap DVD players, CD players wiith an old blanket and place them upright in the carton. To stabilize the laser on a CD player, replace the transport screws (normally located on the bottom of the unit). Label boxes "Fragile" and "This Side Up."
DVDs, CDs, Software Discs, and Video Tapes — Layer the bottom of a small carton with shredded or crushed paper. Pack DVDs, CDs, software discs in their protective sleeves or cases. If sleeves or cases are not available, wrap the items in tissue paper or plastic wrap to prevent scratching. Stand CDs, software discs on edge in cartons. Brace at both ends using a hardback book or layer pieces of cardboard to provide a snug fit. Fill in with paper as needed. Be sure to mark the box "Fragile."

Plasma and Big-Screen TVs, Surround Sound Systems and Entertainment System Components — It is best to use the original packaging when available. Consult the owner's manual for specific instructions on your equipment.

Lamps and Lampshades — Remove bulbs and shades and roll up the cord. Pack lamps with bedding or wrap separately and place upright in a clean, tissue/paper lined carton. Wrap shades in tissue or butchers paper, not newspaper, and place upright in cartons.

Linens — Fold neatly and place in clean cartons, but be careful not to overload.

Medicines — Seal caps with masking tape. Wrap and pack upright in small cartons. Some prescription drugs, such as insulin, lose their potency if exposed to heat, we recommend that you carry all medications with you.

Microwave Ovens — Remove all loose articles inside the oven, such as cookware, glass shelves and carousels. Wrap loose articles and place in a separate container. Tape the door shut. Use the original manufacturer's carton if available.

Personal Computers — Pack computer equipment in original cartons when available. Otherwise, use strong, corrugated cartons and place protective padding on the bottom of the carton. Place additional padding between the carton and the computer. Non-detachable cords also should be wrapped. Place cords between the padded computer and the carton.

Tools and Lawn Equipment — Drain oil and fuel from your equipment (do not ship flammables under any circumstances). Pack hand tools in small, strong cartons. Wrap separately if valuable.

Luggage and Bags
When shipping items with a finish that may be damaged by adhesive labels and soiled during transit e.g., luggage, garment bags, carrying cases), protect them by placing them in an outer shipping container.

Irregular Shapes
When shipping items that cannot be packed into cartons (e.g., auto pipes, mufflers, tires, duffel bags), wrap any sharp edges and protrusions. Plus, wrap the address label securely around the object.
Sealing your package properly keeps your box intact and the contents secure inside.

Recommended Three-Strip Taping Method
• Use pressure-sensitive plastic tape at least 2” (5.08 cm) wide (3” [7.62 cm] width preferred) for lightweight packages.
• Use water-activated paper tape (minimum 3” [7.62 cm] width, 60-pound grade) or water-activated reinforced tape to seal heavier packages.
• Distribute the tape evenly across flaps and seams, using the H taping method shown.
• Apply at least 3 strips of tape to the top and bottom sides of the carton. (See Fig. 4)
• Tape across all seams and flaps.

Note: Sealing your package is as important as cushioning. If the box flaps open in transit, you’re likely to lose the cushioning and the contents.
